Are you a student entering the 11th or 12th grade, and will you be at least 16 years old by the summer of 2009?

Do you want to work as a scientific researcher and get paid for a full-time job?

You are invited to become a Young Nebraska Scientist by participating in our 2009 High School Summer Research Experience.

Research

As a working member of a research team, you will enjoy positive interaction with scientists, undergraduate and graduate students. You will attend lectures on current topics, attend seminars/workshops in research and technical writing, ethics, study strategies, and career exploration, and gain skills in effective oral presentations. Additional planned weekday activities may include educational and fun field trips and social activities.

The summer-long experience culminates in a poster presentation allowing students to demonstrate what you have learned and accomplished to your peers, parents, and University faculty, staff, and students. You will also be educated in a variety of venues in which you may present your work, in Nebraska and nation-wide.

Is this a paid position?

Students are paid a stipend in the amount of $7.50 per hour. All lab costs, activity fees, field trip transportation and program materials are supported by NE EPSCoR, participating institutions, and faculty grants. Off-campus housing, students’ personal spending money, and transportation to and from the lab location are the responsibility of the students’ families.

Who is eligible and how do I apply?

StudentsApplicants must be at least 16 years old by the start of their research experience and must not have graduated from high school. Interested students and parents should complete the application form, request a teacher recommendation, respond to the provided essay topic, indicate STEM field interest(s), and submit completed materials by March 15. Monies allocated for student researchers are limited and vary from year to year, and may have specific requirements for distribution outlined by the sponsor. Sometimes the number and amounts of available positions are not known until after the application deadline.

Applicants are encouraged to complete the application procedure by the submission deadline, or as early as possible. Complete applications will be reviewed and invitations extended on a rolling basis beginning April 1 and continue until all positions are filled. All application materials are available as fill able forms at the Downloadable Forms link. Forms can also be requested by contacting the YNSI Coordinator.

What about housing?

Student researchers work full-time on a University campus and are responsible for their own room and board accommodations. Living accommodations and transportation are at the discretion of the students’ families, so it is recommended that students stay near the campus where they are completing research.
