Are you a current 9th or 10th grader?
Are you interested in learning about the world around you, how and why things work, and how science impacts our lives?
Do you want to learn what it is like to actually do science, all while having fun with other students your age?
Then, this camp is designed to benefit YOU!
Look…being a scientist, or at least thinking and acting like one isn’t rocket science. OK…well…sometimes it is rocket science, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t experience science in the way scientists do!
You are invited to become a Young Nebraska Scientist by participating in our 2008 High School Science Camp, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
- You will be a part of creating a new community of students of science, learn what science is all about, actually do science, and see what exciting career options are available in the sciences.
-
You will also interact with scientists, visit labs, take field-trips, and attend recreational activities.
-
Your week-long experience culminates in a team-oriented poster presentation allowing you to demonstrate what you have learned and accomplished to your peers, parents, and University faculty, staff, and students.
What does it Cost?
YNSI summer camps are fee based programs partially supported by NE EPSCoR funds. The fee for Summer 2008 is $150. The fee covers room and board, while all lab costs, activity fees, field trip transportation and program materials are supported by NE EPSCoR, participating institutions, and faculty grants. Students’ personal spending money and transportation to and from the camp location are the responsibility of the students’ families.
Who is eligible and how do I apply?
Applicants must be enrolled as a current 9th or 10th grader. Interested students and parents should complete the application forms, request a teacher recommendation, and submit completed materials by the date listed below. Space is limited so applicants are encouraged to submit completed materials as early as possible. Complete applications will be reviewed and invitations extended on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. All application materials are available as fill able forms at the Downloadable Forms link. Forms can also be requested by contacting the YNSI Coordinator.
Is there financial aid?
Fees for a number of participants will be funded by NE EPSCoR. The purpose of these scholarships is to promote diverse participation. Regardless of your financial situation, we encourage you to complete the application procedure by the submission deadline. The information you provide on your application will be cross-referenced with diversity and need based requirements and you will be notified as soon as possible as to the outcome.
Where will I stay?
Nebraska secondary institutions host YNSI High School Level Summer Camps on an alternating basis. Participants and residential staff live and dine in University Residence Halls on the host campus. Students invited to attend will be mailed more detailed information on what they will need to bring with them for their stay during the program.
What about housing and supervision?
Students are well cared for during their YNSI experience. The NE EPSCoR Outreach Coordinator and a team of residential counselors (8:1 ratio maximum), university faculty and graduate students, teachers, and diverse, community chaperones work together to provide an academically stimulating, enjoyable, and safe week for each student. Activities are led by teams of experienced science teachers, teachers in training, and University faculty and graduate students.
