The statewide Young Nebraska Scientist Initiative (YNSI) integrates research and education to address Nebraska’s science education and outreach goals. The collaborative spirit among Nebraska research and education institutions established by NE EPSCoR will be the critical factor to strengthen the K-16 STEM student-pipeline. YNSI coordinates experiences at Nebraska research and education institutions to accomplish two goals:

1. Provide opportunities for Nebraska middle and high school students to learn science through doing science and to explore the intersection of science, technology and society with the guidance of scientific and education experts.
2. Provide efficient and effective opportunities for Nebraska researchers to accomplish their broader impacts goals and science outreach missions.

This collaborative effort is a critical step in the preparation of the next generation of STEM professionals. YNSI will increase participants’ technological, scientific, and quantitative literacy, place strong emphasis on closing achievement gaps and increase participation of students from underrepresented groups in STEM fields.
